Zoe in Wonderland Brenda Woods 9780399170973 Books Reviews

Zoe is an engaging and delighting character, and her story is the kind that will suck you right in and leave a smile on your face!
Read with my 11 & 8 year old. We really enjoyed it, but be prepared for some sad parts (11 yr old cried).
My 6 year old and I read this book at bedtime over a week. It was hard to stop reading each night. Two thumbs up from my daughter (10 thumbs up she says). We laughed and we cried and we learned about friendship and learned about an endangered tree called the baobab from Madagascar, the tree of life. That is more of a side note but Zoe's excitement about the tree lead us to do some research on it. All in all we loved this book and will read it again.
We stumbled across this book at her school's book fair. It is so wonderful! This and Girls who Rocked the World are the only 2 books my daughter wants to listen to at bedtime. We do 1 chapter a night and she BEGS for another and another until she can't keep her eyes open. She adores this book and we're going to be gifting a copy to friends for their birthdays this year at her request. She loves it that much.
This was a quick and easy read with endearing characters and a unique setting. The story reminds me of a Sharon Creech novel a quirky main character trying to find her way, living in an unusual setting, dealing with the ups and downs of life. I read a review that not much happens in this book, but I disagree. I think the character arc is plain, and one the target audience will relate to. This is not a book about an event, but a book about a life. I believe in happy endings, so I have no problem with the tidy conclusion. In fact, though there are no loose ends for a sequel, I could easily see more books about Zoe and her family. Although there is sibling disagreement, it was clear the author is not advocating rivalry, but championing a strong family unit. Can't wait to read more by this author.
Zoe Reindeer doesn’t realize it, but she is an anything-but-ordinary girl growing up in an out-of-the-ordinary setting. At first, Zoe sees herself as untalented and dull, so she creates “Imaginary Zoe,” who knows how to handle any situation with a humongous amount of skill. At least this is what ordinary Zoe daydreams about as she passes the days working in her father’s greenhouse called Doc Reindeer’s Exotic Plant Wonderland. Her view on how dull life can be starts to change when a man from Madagascar comes into the greenhouse looking for an exotic plant which not even her father’s greenhouse carries. Zoe is immediately swept away by the adventurous life this man leads and she decides she will surprise her father and try to grow the tree this man wants. Zoe’s life also includes her best friend, Quincy, an annoying older sister, Jade, their loving parents and many other surrounding neighbors, some of which are a little crazy. While Quincy’s parents face a life-changing separation and illness --- which may take Quincy away from Zoe --- Zoe also harbors concerns about her parents’ money problems which may cause them to sell their business and the only environment Zoe can ever imagine growing up in.

The best aspects of this story include the greenhouse also known as the “Wonderland” setting, Zoe’s unique character and the demonstration of the strength in relationships. Zoe spends most of her time taking care of her father’s plants and she enjoys it. Whenever the story steps into that setting the reader will be able to feel the wonder of the colorful, spacious and humid greenhouse environment. The unique environment is matched with Zoe, who doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty, has a strange variety of interests and an incredible imagination. These two features are teamed up to create a truly irreplaceable story that does not resemble anything ever seen in literature.

However, the relationships between the characters and the serious situations they’re going through still makes this book relatable. Zoe has always had an unbreakable bond with her best friend, Quincy, but throughout the story she questions how they will stay best friends with so many changes, especially when he finds out his mother has cancer and he has to move across the country to live with his father. Zoe is forced into trying to make new friends and she wonders if that somehow hurts her and Quincy’s relationship. She also recognizes patterns in her parents’ behavior that seem troublesome. These are situations that are not uncommon for 11-year-old children to deal with as they begin to grow up and Brenda Woods, author of ZOE IN WONDERLAND, covers these concerns beautifully in an original way.

ZOE IN WONDERLAND is a good book for kids who are looking for a new twist on realistic fiction. This book explores what is inside the mind of an 11-year-old girl who while resistant eventually learns to accept big changes. By the end readers will hope that her ability to adapt to change will be contagious and realize that their own life is somewhat of an adventure as well.
