Bodyguard Hollywood AList Book 2 eBook CD Reiss

Bodyguard by C.D. Reiss is the second standalone novel in the author’s delightful Hollywood-A-list Series. It has a little bit of everything: great girlfriends, a hunky hero with baggage, a creepy stalker, and a sweet, sexy heroine.

Childhood friends, Darlene and Emily, leave home in search of fame and fortune in Los Angeles. One of them gets the fame, and one gets a loser boyfriend. When Emily rids herself of the loser, he becomes a really sick stalker who is set on getting her back or making sure no one else gets her love. Enter one white knight in the form of Darlene’s bodyguard. Carter Kincaid is extraordinarily well suited to be a bodyguard, and he is total eye candy to boot. Between Darlene’s devotion to her best pal and Carter’s professional attention, Emily can’t help but be safe, right?

Emily, Carter, and Darlene are each fantastic characters. I loved Darlene and Emily’s friendship. They are the embodiment of sister-friends. Carter, who remains an enigma to Emily for much of the book, carries a lot of personal baggage. His dedication to his job and his devotion to his family make him a yummy book boyfriend. The ex-boyfriend, Kyle, is equal parts distasteful and creepy. They all make the story gripping.

Ms. Reiss delivers her usual well-written story; her plots are crisp, her descriptions evocative without being flowery, and her characters are more real than your next-door neighbors. The Bodyguard’s ending is perfect. It is hopeful and promising without a trite ride-into-the-sunset HEA.

Bodyguard Hollywood AList Book 2 eBook CD Reiss Reviews

You may be thinking this story is all about falling for the Bodyguard which is an alluring storyline by itself and to an extent that would be a correct assumption. But if you've ever read a book written by C.D. Reiss before then you already know that she is going to create a story that is soooooo much more than what you're expecting in the best way possible, and if you're a new reader then be prepared for a layered story that goes deeper than what you see on the surface.
The story within the pages of Bodyguard puts you in Emily's shoes and what it feels like to need protecting, to never feeling safe, to being stalked and threatened, living behind a wall of security to only feel more and more vulnerable, and just needing to break free. It also puts you in Carter's shoes, as not only aka the Bodyguard but also as a man that has built his own wall of protection around his life from a tragic past that threatens to destroy everything/everyone he loves. Protection and safety are crucial to Emily and to Carter, if the walls of their protection are breached it could ruin them or it may just be what is needed to break them free!!
If the angst of the Marriage Games / Separation Games duet and King of Code felt like too much to you, CD Reiss gives you a break in this book. Bodyguard does have its share of nervous agony, but the sense of emotional desolation that Reiss writes so well is missing here.

What replaces it is an undercurrent of suspense will the stalker who has provoked and manipulated Emily keep wreaking havoc on her?

It helps that she has Carter Kincaid as her bodyguard. Carter quite literally shields Emily's body with his own, and you will wish that you could trade places with her. He's tall, big, strong, tough, and steady, even as he's also tender and kind. He's just so swoony that you won't what to quit him when you turn the last page.

It could be easy to dismiss this as a simple romantic suspense novel, but in Reiss's hands, it is so much more. There is a subplot regarding Emily's wasted opportunities and what the realization of that does to her, and there is another subplot involving Carter's family. Reiss wraps the former in a sort of melancholy and the latter in a loving sense of despair. I know that sounds strange, but trust me Carter's love for someone in his family is so intense that you can sense his hopelessness.

A word about the sexy times they are delicious fun. They are steamy, succulent, and sizzling. Strap on your vibrators, girls, because Carter will fill you with NEED.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. My only quibble - and I know it sounds rather picky - is the denouement. The build-up is fierce and fraught, and then things happen that are talked about afterwards. You don't see them as they occur, and I think you need that.
